The film is shortlisted for the Oscar for Best International Film (Denmark) and Zar Amir Ebrahimi won the Best Actress Award at Cannes.
Holy Spider is based on the real-life story of an Iranian serial killer at the turn of the century. A journalist descends into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so called “Spider Killer”, who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners.
